GLASSES AND THIN FILMS FOR NANOPHOTONICS AND INTEGRATED OPTICS

Research


This research group is devoted to the preparation, development and characterisation of optical and photonic materials, in particular glasses and thin films, both amorphous and nanocrystalline, for passive and active integrated optics and other optical applications. Such materials are prepared either by melting, or by sol-gel processing of a room temperature liquid phase.

The group is interested in the structure and properties of such materials, studied by optical spectroscopies (UV-Visible, FTIR, Raman, Ellipsometry anf Photoluminescence) and X-ray spectroscopies (EXAFS and XANES), whereas the nanoscale microstructures are investigated by electron microscopies (SEM and TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Other techniques used include m-line spectrometry.

Particular emphasis is placed on the optical properties related to active applications in integrated optics, such as waveguide mode characteristics, light emission from lanthanide ions like Er3+ (including the fluorescence spectra and corresponding emission lifetimes) and the optical loss, measured at different laser wavelengths. There is also a directed effort on nanocrystalline films doped with both lanthanide (Er3+, Yb3+, ...) and noble metal elements (such as silver and gold) and on photonic bandgap materials and structures, prepared by sol-gel processing. The later include both 1-D Fabry-Perot micro-cavities doped with Er3+ and Yb3+ and 3-D colloidal photonic crystal opals and inverted opals prepared by self-assembly from materials like polystyrene, silica and titania. A new line of work deal with the development of bioactive scaffolds for bone tissue regeneration, prepared by sol-gel processing with dual hierarchical porosity at nano and macro scales.
